Lombok Turtle Conservation at Its Finest: A Private Sanctuary Experience

21 July 2025 • Written by Anja Braeken

Staying with us at The Lombok Lodge Hospitality®, you are invited to experience more than just barefoot luxury; you are welcomed into a unique environmental initiative: Lombok Turtle Conservation at our very own Turtle Retreat. Nestled on the unspoiled shores of nort-west Lombok, our brand new Private Villa Estate offers the exclusive opportunity to witness and support the life cycle of one of the ocean’s most magnificent species.

When it comes to unforgettable island escapes, Lombok stands out not only for its natural beauty but also for its remarkable efforts in turtle conservation.

Lombok Turtle Haven

Welcome to Turtle Haven, the heart of our Villa Estate’s eco-conscious mission.

Inspired by the island’s centuries-old connection with sea turtles, our charmingturtle retreat offers an intimate experience with these ancient mariners. From Green and Hawksbill to Leatherback sea turtles, the beaches surrounding our villas remain vital nesting grounds for these endangered creatures.

You may witness the nesting ritual firsthand—an awe-inspiring natural event that unfolds beneath moonlit skies. These turtles, guided by instinct and memory, return to the very beaches of their birth to lay eggs—often within just a few steps of our serene villas.

THE ANCIENT RITUAL: NESTING, HATCHING & HOPE

The Lombok turtle nesting process is nothing short of miraculous. Female turtles emerge under the cover of darkness, seek out the ideal spot above the high tide line, and spend up to three hours digging, laying, and covering their clutches of 80 to 180 eggs. Depending on temperature, the sex of the hatchlings is determined within the nest. After 45 to 75 days, baby turtles emerge, guided by moonlight, and begin their treacherous journey to the sea.

Only an estimated 1 in 1,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood, so every egg carries immense value. At Turtle Haven, our team actively guards each nest, shields it from predators, and protects it from environmental threats.

BEYOND THE NEST: EDUCATION, ACTION, AND PRESERVATIO

Lombok turtle conservation is more than a passive activity—it’s a shared responsibility.
