A Living Tradition I Love to Share. Quack O’Clock in Lombok: The White Duck Parade. Lombok’s Prettiest Traffic Jam
Late in the afternoon, when the sun starts to soften and the air becomes cooler, the Estate white ducks slowly crosses the rice fields. Sometimes there are hundreds of them, sometimes only a few dozen – always calm, always unhurried.
Our valued Villa Residents often stop, take photos, smile. For the farmers, this is simply daily life.
Why White Ducks?
The ducks you see are mostly Peking ducks, used in Lombok for generations.
They are chosen for very practical reasons:
White feathers reflect sunlight, helping them stay cool in the tropical heat
They are strong, calm animals and adapt easily to field life
They are excellent egg layers and grow well for meat
They are easy for farmers to manage in open rice fields
Nothing about this is for show.
It is knowledge passed down through experience.
Why Ducks in the Rice Fields?
The ducks are not decoration — they are part of the farming system.
As they move through the paddies, they
> eat insects, snails, larvae and small pests
> remove weed seeds
> loosen and aerate the soil
> fertilise the fields naturally with their manure
This natural cooperation improves rice growth while completely eliminating the need for chemical pesticides and artificial fertilisers.
This method is known as Rice–Duck Farming and is recognised as one of the most sustainable agricultural systems in the world.
On Lombok, it is simply how farming has always been done.
Where Do the Estate Ducks Go at Night?
When evening comes, the ducks are gently guided back to a simple bamboo shelter near the farmer’s home. There they drink, rest and sleep safely.
They are protected from snakes, birds of prey, rats and other predators.
In the morning, they return to the fields and the cycle continues.
Why We Love Sharing This With you?
At The Lombok Lodge Hospitality, we believe true luxury comes from authenticity.
Watching The Lombok Lodge Villa Estate ducks move across the fields during sunrise is one of those quiet Lombok moments that stays with people.
Many guests later tell us that this simple scene became one of their most treasured memories of the island.
What Do the Ducks Eat & Drink?
In the rice fields they naturally feed on:
> insects
> snails
> worms
> larvae
> algae
> weed seeds
At home they are given extra food such as:
> rice bran
> corn
> cassava
> kitchen leftovers
They drink from irrigation canals and clean water containers placed by the farmer.
Why Duck Manure Is So Valuable for the Lombok farmers
Duck manure is rich in nitrogen and organic matter. It improves soil structure, strengthens young rice plants, increases harvest yield and keeps the fields fertile without chemicals.
