When you hear the word bee, what comes to mind first? The sweet taste of honey? The gentle buzzing in the air? Or perhaps that tiny fear of getting stung? If the thought of bees makes you a little nervous, I have some good news for you. Not all bees sting — and the ones we’re talking about today, the stingless bees of Lombok, create one of nature’s most precious gifts: our Lombok Liquid Gold.

The Magic of Stingless Bees

It may surprise you to learn that there are over 20,000 species of bees in the world — and many of them are stingless! These gentle creatures, also known as Meliponines, still have a stinger, but it’s too small to use. Instead of defending themselves with stings, they focus their energy on creating something extraordinary: a uniquely rich and healing honey.

Their honey is different from the kind you find on supermarket shelves. It’s darker, thinner, tangier, and packed with nutrients and antioxidants. The flavor changes throughout the year depending on which flowers are in bloom — a little sweet, a little sour, with hints of fruit and forest.

Meet Lombok’s Tiny Honey Masters

Here in Lombok, the most common stingless bee species is Trigona Clypearis Friese. They live in hollow tree trunks / wooden boxes and work together in small colonies — about 7,000 bees per hive — producing just 200 to 300 ml of honey every four months. It’s a true labor of love.

Inside the hive, every bee has its role:
The Queen Bee (Ratu): Lays the eggs and keeps harmony in the colony.
The Worker Bees: All female collect nectar, pollen, and resin, and tend to the young.
The Drones: The males have one purpose only: to mate with the queen.

Each tiny bee works tirelessly, day after day, collecting the essence of Lombok’s tropical flora.

Nature’s Medicine – ‘Mother Honey’

For centuries, people in Lombok have called stingless bee honey “Mother Medicine.” It’s long been used to: Boost the immune system, fight infections and bacteria, soothe sore throats and coughs, heal wounds and burns, support digestion and overall wellbeing

This precious honey contains powerful antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, and zinc — all thanks to the bees’ ability to reach the tiniest blossoms that regular bees can’t access. Their resin, known as propolis, is another natural wonder — rich in amino acids, vitamins A to E, and bioflavonoids that help repair and protect the body.

Why We Call It ‘Liquid Gold’

Lombok locals have used this honey for generations — for its taste, of course, but also for its incredible healing powers. Modern science now confirms what Lombok’s people have always known: stingless bee honey has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties.
Whether used as a natural remedy, a beauty treatment, or simply drizzled over breakfast, this honey is truly one of Lombok’s treasures.
